What can I tell you about mountains when almost everyone here was born in them or nearby? BEAUTIFUL!!! In bold and underlined. But snow? I’m going to talk about it. While some say: How come? “I’m not going” “I’ll freeze.” “What a hassle to get sick.” “If I don’t ski, what can I do there?…”
Others say: “What a beauty, so different from the usual!” It’s just about knowing how to dress warmly and enjoying unique landscapes and activities! And I’m not kidding. There are beautiful mountains in many places, but if I can also visit them when they are white, even better. There are several, in the south of South America, the USA, Canada, Japan, Central Europe, Italy, France, and… Spain.
Where do you want to go? Where is better? Where is more expensive? I like where they speak Spanish, where there is excellent and varied gastronomy, where it is easy to get to, and where I find many activities to entertain myself.
Baqueira, in the Spanish Pyrenees, is one of the most beautiful ski resorts in the world and has everything I mention and more. Along with Sierra Nevada, in Granada (Andalusia), they are part of the International Ski Circuit.
I’ve known Baqueira since 1969 when I learned to ski, and it’s not so difficult if you don’t intend to be a renowned expert, and it’s very fun and healthy. I no longer ski (I miss it “a little”), but I’m surrounded by beautiful landscapes, charming and lively villages in the Aran Valley, pleasant evenings, dog sledding, snowmobiling on white slopes and through forests, spas, quality hotels, and all kinds of restaurants.
Enjoying a snow resort anywhere is not cheap, but the wonderful Baqueira is much cheaper than in the USA, Canada, Japan, or the rest of Europe (the Alps); it’s beautiful, and they speak Spanish (also Catalan and Aranese).
Until next time.
