About 15-20 days maximum? This is what everyone almost always tells me.
Then, let’s start with the South. Does that sound good?
NAPLES, chaotic and CHARMING. YES, IT IS WORTH “discovering,” at least for 1 night, in a well-located hotel with a good view. Did you know there are direct flights to Naples (capital of Campania) from Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, or Milan? And “n” trains from Rome (1 h 10 min, 225 km)?
Also, from Naples and its splendid bay, you can visit the BEAUTIFUL and LIVELY Amalfi Coast (It is a World Heritage Site!), with small villages like Positano, Rapallo, Amalfi, Vietri sul Mare…, all within short distance. Also, from the port of Naples, there are several ferries to the beautiful Isle of Capri, where you can spend a great day (a bit “expensive,” if you look closely at the shop prices which are, “a beauty”).
For convenience, it is very pleasant to sleep in one of these towns like Amalfi or Sorrento and not have to change “beds” every day. At Afondo, we already have some favorite hotels. About 5 nights are enough for Campania, but the final decision always comes down to “consumer preference”.
From Naples, there are various flights (1 hour) to Catania, the 2nd city of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, with wonderful Carthaginian, Roman, Saracen, Norman, Byzantine… and even Spanish corners. “Very varied rulers”. It did not join the Kingdom of Italy until 1861. Its countryside is beautiful and its wine and gastronomy… say no more! And as a good Mediterranean land, somewhat “chaotic”. But it is well worth the visit and more.
Catania is a VERY pleasant “large and quiet town,” Greek, Roman, and tremendously Sicilian. Near it are the elegant Taormina, at the foot of Mount Etna, the ancient Syracuse (of Magna Graecia), and the baroque town of Noto. “A real treat”. This area justifies 2-3 nights.
Are we already dreaming of a summer in Italy? I am!
And, where else in the South of the Italian boot? There’s much more, only days are missing!
Until next time.
